There are tons of articles out there on Twitter from predicting its future to rationalizing its existence; people seem to either praise it or hate it. I am by nature a skeptic however, my theory with most things I don’t understand is that before I indulge in the rewards that come with mocking something I must first try it out. So I did and you know what? I love it.
Why? Twitter has expanded to more than just random tweets about nothing. Savvy people using Twitter have realized that if you really want people to follow you, you must say something of interest. I focused my little Twitter community around design, food and gardening. Every time I log on I’m greeted with hundreds of tips, leads, and links from people I want to hear from and on the subjects I care about. If someone’s tweets prove unsatisfactory I simple “unfollow” them.
Most importantly, what I’ve learned is that Twitter’s popularity is fairly new and there is a lot of talk about the potential power that Twitter holds. Personally I’m not so concerned about unlocking Twitter’s most inner powers, looking at it this way can make it a daunting task. All I know is that it’s fun, not nearly as time consuming as I thought it would be and it has actually exposed me to some really great things.
If you’re curious about Twitter the best thing to do is just jump right in there and start tweeting or at least follow a few people before you get up the nerve to say your own awe-inspiring tweet.
